Greensboro Deve
loper Joe Koury’s “grandest” vision beckoned; to develop the
1,500 acres of land he had acquired over 30 years in the Sedgefield area of
Guilford County. Still referring to it as “the Sedgefield Project” in a 1993
interview he states, “In a short while you are going to see a golf course here,
and then you will see a town blossoming.” Soon after, the name “Grandover”
was conceived. The East Course, the first of two championship golf courses
opened in March 1996. Just over a year later the West Course opened in May
1997. The courses are open to the public daily.
The East Course, opened in March 1996 is a challenging 7250 yards from the
championship tees. Many of the holes are designed to give stadium type effect and the
tree lined fairways offer a seasonal blaze of color providing guests the feeling of being in
a nature preserve in the heartland of golf.
The West Golf Course opened in May 1997, formed with the naturally rolling terrain and
elevation changes found in the Piedmont of North Carolina.
Joseph Koury Passes at the Age Of 72
March 4, 1998, Joseph Koury passes suddenly at the age of 72. During the last
several years of his life, Joe poured his relentless energy into Grandover.
His pioneering vision and appetite for risk were legendary.
A place where everyone from the mill worker to the mill president feels welcomed.
